“Wake Up” by Travis Scott (ft. The Weeknd)

“Wake Up” is actually a love song, albeit a provocative one that utilizes NSFW language. The title is derived from the artists ‘not wanting to wake up’. This sentiment is meant to express the fact that they do not want to get out of bed since they are sleeping next to their loved ones. Indeed rather than getting up they would rather stay in bed and enjoy their partners’ company.

And although this may sound like a superficial disposition for a love song, you can tell by studying the track’s lyrics that the artists are serious about the women they are singing about. For instance, by referencing the celebrity couple “Ice-T” and “Coco” Austin, Travis Scott insinuates that he also perceives his woman as a spouse. And in the bridge, The Weeknd states that the woman he is singing to has power over his life, as she ‘decides if he lives or dies’.

So if you strip out of some of the adult language, “Wake Up” actually reads like an affectionate love song where outside of appreciating bedroom fun with their partners, the artists (particularly The Weeknd) also express an emotional dependency on their love.
